My recent home upgrade in Reading

I needed a fitted bar after hosting a gathering where we lacked space. I decided to look near Forbury Gardens.

I stumbled upon the site while browsing and emailed photos. Central Bedroom and Kitchens responded with a quote that seemed fair for the job.

The process of planning this renovation was honestly quite detailed. I dedicated several days reflecting on the configuration of the room before ever picking up the device. My lounge area has constantly felt a bit incomplete, and owning a proper zone for beverages felt like the perfect fix to that problem. I remember standing in my hallway staring at a messy countertop covered with bottles and feeling that something had to shift. The first interaction with the team was very simple, which gave me assurance. We talked different styles, from contemporary sleek looks to something classic and wooden finishes. I was really surprised by how many detail they requested about the measurements and the current decor of my house. It felt like they truly desired the finished result to blend perfectly with the balance of the property. I provided various views in the images I uploaded, making sure each corner was visible. They explained that the bespoke nature of the unit meant that accuracy was absolutely critical to avoid any issues during the installation. We moved forth and back on possible resources, searching at swatches of laminate and different kinds of timber patterns. It is surprising how much thought goes into picking the correct hardware, like knobs and copyrights, which can totally alter the feel of the whole construction. I wanted a place where I could easily prepare cocktails for guests without having to constantly run back to the pantry for ice or tools. The convenience of having everything in one spot was the primary driver for this investment. We finalised the design following a short meeting where every one of my questions regarding wiring and lighting points were addressed. I appreciated that they did not hurry the design phase, spending the effort to ensure that the depth of the shelving was enough for my largest bottles. It seemed like a joint process rather than a simple sale, which is rare to find nowadays.

The installation day arrived faster than anticipated, and the fitter was on time and ready. He began by laying down protective sheets to ensure my flooring remained tidy. Watching the components being unpacked was interesting, as the standard of the wood was instantly obvious. He meticulously checked the levels of the floor before securing the base structure of the unit. I watched as the skeleton gradually gained shape, changing a plain alcove into a practical feature. The level of craftsmanship involved in fitting the panels to the wonky walls of my period home was impressive. He explained why each piece fitted together to create total strength. We spent a little duration choosing on the final height for the integrated fridge, making sure it was accessible to open but hidden back from direct sight. The fitting of the worktop was the highly rewarding moment of the entire day. Seeing the smooth top finally resting on the base made the vision feel to life. He next fitted the mirrored backing, which immediately made the room to feel double the size. The LEDs were connected next, and testing them for the first time was a thrill. The soft glow underneath the shelves showcased the bottles beautifully. I was able to visualise precisely how useful this would be for night parties. The worker was very diligent, taking the effort to wipe down every surface and remove any debris created during the drilling. He also demonstrated me how to adjust the shelves if I ever wanted to house larger pieces. The focus to detail was really great, right down to the sealant beads around the edges. It was clear that he had great pride in his work, which is consistently reassuring to see. We conducted a final inspection of the finished work to ensure everything was perfect. I noted that a single knob was a bit loose, and he tightened it straight away with a fast twist of a screwdriver. This thoroughness was just what I was hoping for when I booked the job.

The finished bar looks completely stunning and has become the focal point of my downstairs. It provides a classy feel that was previously lacking from my reception room. The storage is immense, enabling me to sort all my spirits, sodas, and specialist glassware in a cohesive place. No longer do I need to search inside cluttered cupboard cabinets to locate a corkscrew or a certain kind of tumbler. Everything has its rightful place, which renders entertaining much much easier and stress-free. I enjoy the way the materials reflect the sunlight in the evenings, making a warm ambience. My friends have now praised the setup multiple occasions, with some actually asking for the details of the company who made it. It truly feels like a bespoke extra made specifically for my lifestyle. The height of the surface is perfect for standing by with a drink, and the integrated lighting units offer just the correct amount of glow without being overpowering. Even when not in use, it serves as a beautiful item of cabinetry that lifts the entire look of the property. I spent some time placing my collection on the racks to make a visual display. The glass back truly assist in showcasing the bottles and giving dimension to the tight space. It has inspired me to experiment creating different drinks that I before felt were too fussy to bother in a standard setting. Having the sink nearby might have been good, but the area limits meant we opted without it to preserve cabinet space. This was a conscious decision we took during the design phase, and I do not rue it. The additional cupboard space for straws and tools is far more valuable to me in the long term.

There were a couple of minor drawbacks that are fair to mentioning for a honest view. The lead time for the bespoke panels was a little slower than I initially wanted. It took about eight weeks from the first deposit to the final installation date. While this is expected for tailored furniture, it required a bit of waiting on my part. I had hoped to have it finished for a certain event, but we passed that deadline by a few days. However, the communication from the team regarding the delay was consistent, so I was not left in the unknowing. I rather wait a bit longer for a product that is built to last than have a hasty work that fails after a few years. The start cost estimate was also a little lower than the total invoice, mainly because I decided to upgrade the handles and include extra internal lighting midway during the build. These adjustments were completely my decision, and the team was extremely clear about the extra fees required. Another small point was the volume of packaging remaining following the fitting. Although the worker tidied up the work site perfectly, there was a large amount of waste to dispose of in my recycling. It was not a big problem, but something to keep in mind if you possess little waste space. Despite these small details, the overall experience was vastly positive. The quality of the finish is much better to anything I might have bought off-the-shelf. It feels sturdy and durable, and I am confident it will withstand decades of parties. I believe the worth it has added to my home well exceeds the upfront cost. It has transformed the way I enjoy my downstairs area, making it far more social. I not anymore sense cluttered when people visit.

Reflecting back on the whole experience, I am truly glad I went forward with it. The first idea came from a visit to a neighbour's house in Oxford, where they had a similar bar. I saw then how much it enhanced the movement of the evening. When I returned to Reading, I began looking for local firms and found that going with a specialist provider was the only way to achieve the precise look I desired. The ability to choose every detail, from the colour of the stain to the placement of the power sockets, ensured the final product was exactly as I pictured. I even had a tiny hidden drawer included for storing expensive tools like silver spoons. This kind of customisation is what makes the experience special. It didn't feel like a mass-produced item being fitted into a space where it did not fit. Instead, it looks like it has forever been a segment of the architecture. If you are considering a similar home improvement, my tip would be to be calm and spend the effort on the design stage. It is much easier to change a drawing than it is to fix a cabinet once it is built. The expertise provided during the start was crucial in stopping me from making common mistakes, such as placing the cooler too close to a radiator. These little details of wisdom are what you pay for when you hire skilled experts. I am now looking at different areas of my home to see where else I could add fitted storage. The success bespoke home bar of this bar project has given me the confidence to tackle a larger renovation in the bedroom next season. It has been a great upgrade to my daily routine, and I look forward to numerous years of enjoying it with relatives and pals. Finding the right balance between style and function was the aim, and I think we reached it completely. The journey from a messy alcove to a stylish hosting hub was well deserving the effort and money spent. I today have a home that I am really proud to share with to others. Reading has many nice places to go for a cocktail, but honestly, I now prefer being at my place and enjoying my own personal bar. It provides the same feel without the noise or the commute. That itself was worth the whole project. I am very happy with how the ambience functions in the night, providing a chill environment to unwind after a long shift at work. It is the small treats like this that make house life much rewarding and fulfilling. I really appreciate the workmanship that was put into the final product. The way the panels close with a silent click tells plenty about the construction level. No aspect was overlooked, and the total appearance is precisely what I needed it would be when I originally started this adventure. It is a credit to the skill of the fitters and the standard of the materials used. I am a truly happy client.
